John 17

What is this prayer commonly known as?
• The High Priestly Prayer as it would be a typical prayer given by a high priest
• Jesus intended for this prayer to be overheard and not done in secret

I. The Prayer of Jesus for Himself vs. 1-5

What are some notable things we see about Jesus’ prayer for himself?
1. Jesus requested that He be glorified in order to bring further glory to the Father.

* Jesus’ petition was not to receive glory independently from the Father, but to be glorified to the praise of the Father.
* Compare Satan and his desire in (Isaiah 14:12-14)

2. Jesus requested the glory which rightfully belonged to Him.

* It’s often overlooked that Jesus left the glory he had to live amongst mankind. He is requesting that which already was his
* Remember the temptation of Jesus in Luke 4. Satan offered to glorify Jesus if he only obeyed him. Jesus didn’t want any old glory but the glory of the father.

3. Christ’s gained additional glory through suffering

Contrast with Philippians 2.6-11
a. Philippians 2.6- claimed what was already his
b. Vs. 7-8 glory for what he did on the cross
c. Vs. 9-11 name above all others

.What ways can we bring glory to the father?
• through our faith and obedience in his word, bringing others into relationship with him, and through suffering
• he had glorified the father in life but he was also going to accomplish this in death

II. The Prayer of Jesus for His Disciples (17.6-19)

This prayer already assumes the sufficiency of the work of the Son on the cross, securing their salvation before it even happens. In other words he knew this was for their salvation

This prayer is for his disciples and not the world at large

What are some of the things Jesus is praying to the father for his disciples?

III. The Prayer of Jesus for All Believers (17:20-27)

What is the difference between unity and uniformity?

“Our Lord chose as his disciple’s men who were radically different in temperament, personality and political philosophy. It was because of their glaring differences that their unity was so evident”

Paul agrees with this in 1 Corinthians 12, embracing all parts of the body

Our unity is made all the more complete by the differences we share. We gather on a Wednesday evening and we differ in age, race, political affiliation, and socio-economic demo

Vs. 24 he prays for a reunion with his disciples. He will depart from them physically but he still has concern for their well being

It is a great prayer which our Lord allowed His disciples to overhear in their hour of anxiety and distress. It is little wonder that the Spirit of God has preserved it for us as well.

If you were one of the disciples present, what impact would it have on you to hear this prayer?
The Holy Spirit has preserved this for us so it can have an impact on us now
